OEM & Private-Label Forged Wheels: How the Process Works

OEM and private-label forged wheels are wheels engineered, forged, machined, finished and packaged by a manufacturer but sold under your brand — you supply the design intent, the sizes and the logo, and the factory supplies the engineering, tooling, testing, branding and export documentation, with no manufacturer branding anywhere on the product. For a wholesaler, distributor or tuning brand, this is the fastest route from “we want our own wheel line” to a container of saleable stock, without buying a forging press.

This guide walks through how the process actually runs at a factory-direct supplier: the difference between white-label, private-label and full OEM, the seven stages from brief to shipment, what can carry your logo, what drives cost, and exactly what to send us so your first quotation is accurate instead of a placeholder.

The Short Answer (TL;DR)

  • Three models exist. White-label (our design + your logo), private-label (our platform, restyled and rebranded for you) and full OEM (your drawing, your tooling, your design ownership).
  • The process has seven stages: brief and feasibility → CAD and engineering drawing → sample → validation and testing → branding and packaging setup → series production → final QC, documents and shipment.
  • MOQ is 4 pcs per design, mixed sizes allowed within an order, so you can launch a staggered fitment without committing to a full container.
  • Lead times run from drawing approval: samples 10–15 calendar days; monoblock production 25–30 calendar days; 2-piece production 35–40 calendar days.
  • Your branding can go on the spoke face, the window, the barrel, the center cap, valve caps, the box, the label and the warranty card.
  • The single biggest cause of delay is an incomplete RFQ. Size × width, PCD, ET, centre bore, quantity and destination port are the six data points that turn a rough estimate into a firm price.

These three terms get used interchangeably in sourcing emails, and the difference matters because it decides your tooling cost, your lead time and whether a competitor can buy the same wheel next season.

Most buyers who contact us start at white-label or private-label on their first program, then move to full OEM once a style sells. Because forging is a machining-led process rather than a mould-led one, moving between the three is far less painful than it is in cast wheel production — you are not writing off a casting die every time you change a spoke profile.

The Seven Stages, Start to Container

1. Brief and feasibility review

You send target vehicles or applications, sizes, construction preference, finish direction, target volume and destination market. We confirm what is producible as drawn, flag anything that will fight the caliper or the fender, and tell you honestly if a spoke profile needs thickening for the load you are asking for. Nothing is quoted before this step, because a price on an unbuildable drawing helps nobody.

2. CAD and engineering drawing approval

We turn the brief into a dimensioned drawing: face design, spoke section, PCD, ET, centre bore, lip and barrel profile, valve position, cap seat. This is the document your lead time is counted from — not the date of your first email, and not the date of the PO. Revisions before approval cost nothing but time; revisions after approval restart the clock.

3. Sample production

One wheel, or a staggered pair, produced on the same equipment as series production so what you approve is what you receive. Samples run 10–15 calendar days. Most buyers use the sample for fitment checks on the actual vehicle, photography for their catalogue and a finish sign-off under their own lighting.

4. Validation and testing

Our plant operates under ISO and IATF certification, and third-party testing through TÜV or SGS is available on request and quoted per program. Decide your testing scope at the drawing stage, not after production — the destination market determines what evidence your customs broker and your insurer will want, and retro-fitting a test program to finished stock is expensive.

5. Branding and packaging setup

Logo placement is marked on the approved drawing, custom center caps are tooled, and packaging artwork is proofed. See the branding table below for what is available.

6. Series production

Forging, heat treatment, then machining across our 60+ CNC machines in 3-, 4- and 5-axis configurations, followed by finishing. Production runs 25–30 calendar days for monoblock construction and 35–40 calendar days for 2-piece construction, counted from drawing approval. Three-piece programs are scoped on request — send the specification and we will confirm feasibility and timing before you commit.

7. Final QC, documents and shipment

Dimensional and finish inspection, packing, and export paperwork under HS code 8708.70. We ship EXW, FOB or CIF depending on whether you or we control the freight leg, and we regularly ship into the EU, North America, Australia and South Africa.

A realistic planning figure for a first private-label program, including one round of drawing revisions and a sample approval cycle, is roughly 8–12 weeks from first brief to goods ready. Repeat orders on an approved drawing skip stages 1 to 5 entirely.

The deep lip and barrel shown above are typical marking surfaces: on a deep dish forged wheel there is enough uninterrupted material to carry a full brand wordmark rather than a compressed logo. Wheels leave our factory with no FLEXIFORGED branding on them unless you specifically ask for it. If you want a neutral shipment — unbranded boxes, no manufacturer marks, your labels applied in your own warehouse — say so in the RFQ and we will build it that way.

What Actually Drives Your Unit Price

  • Construction. Monoblock is the efficient choice for most programs; 2-piece buys you lip depth, staggered offsets and rebuildability at a higher price and longer lead time.
  • Diameter and width. Billet size scales with the wheel, and so does machining time.
  • Material. 6061-T6 aluminium for the great majority of road programs; AZ80 or ZK60 magnesium where weight is the priority and the buyer accepts the cost and care requirements.
  • Finish. Brushed, polished, multi-stage and two-tone finishes each add labour per wheel.
  • Branding tooling. Custom center caps and custom packaging carry their own one-time setup, amortised over your run.
  • Quantity per design. MOQ is 4 pcs, but setup cost per wheel falls sharply as the run grows — this is where the real margin conversation happens.
  • Testing scope. Optional third-party TÜV or SGS reporting is quoted per program.
  • Incoterm. EXW, FOB and CIF prices are not comparable line for line; make sure you benchmark suppliers on the same term.

FAQ

Can you put our logo on the wheels?

Yes. Your logo can be laser-etched or CNC-engraved on the spoke face, the wheel window or the barrel, and it can be produced on custom center caps, valve caps, boxes, labels and warranty cards. Wheels leave our factory with no FLEXIFORGED branding on them unless you ask for it. Send a vector file (AI, EPS or SVG) and we will mark the placement on the drawing before sampling.

What’s your MOQ for a private-label program?

Our MOQ is 4 pcs per design, and you can mix sizes within an order — for example two 20×9 and two 20×10.5 for a staggered set. Custom center cap tooling and custom printed packaging have their own setup, so tell us your expected 12-month volume and we will quote the branding items separately from the wheels.

How long does the whole process take from drawing to shipment?

Samples take 10–15 calendar days, and series production takes 25–30 calendar days for monoblock and 35–40 calendar days for 2-piece, counted from drawing approval. Add sea freight to your destination port. A first private-label program including one revision round and a sample approval cycle usually runs about 8–12 weeks from brief to goods ready.

Who owns the design if you develop it for us?

If you supply the design, or pay for exclusive development, the design is yours and we do not sell it to another buyer. If you add your branding to one of our existing platforms, the base design stays ours and only your branding is exclusive to you. Whichever arrangement applies is put in writing before tooling starts.

Do you provide test reports for our market?

Our plant is ISO and IATF certified, and third-party testing through TÜV or SGS is available on request and quoted per program. Tell us the destination market at the briefing stage, because the testing scope you need is decided when the drawing is approved, not after production has run.
